How to Craft a Fishing Rod

To begin your fishing journey, you’ll need to craft a Fishing Rod at the Supplies Workbench. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 20 Logs: Gathered by chopping down trees.
  • 10 Copper Ingots: Smelted from Copper Ore and Charcoal in a furnace.

Ensure you’ve unlocked the Essential Tools under the Crafting section in your Memetics menu to access the Supplies Workbench. Press ‘F’ to add the fishing rod to your crafting queue. The time it will take to complete crafting will be displayed on the lower left side of your menu. When it’s finished, make sure to take it from your workstation.

Acquiring Fishing Bait

If you’ve ever done fishing in real life before, you should know that you need some bait to attract the fishes. Bait in Once Human can be crafted or obtained through various means:

  • Dough Fish Bait: Crafted from 1x Corn; effective for regular fish.
  • Mince Bait: Made from 1x Raw Meat; attracts predator fish.
  • Bait with Mixed Spices: Requires 1x Masala; suitable for regular fish.
  • Rubber Bait: Uses 3x Rubber; lures predator fish.
  • Crankbait: Produced by the Frog the Leaper Deviant; serves as universal bait for all fish types.

How to Fish in Once Human?

The very first thing you need to look for while fishing is a fishing spot. Fish can be found in various bodies of water, including rivers, lakes, and oceans. Look for areas where the water turns green when aiming your cast, indicating a viable fishing spot. Once you’ve found an area of water with fishes, go ahead and dip your fishing rod in the water. This will open up a separate mini-game interface that works as follows:

  • Casting the Line: Equip your Fishing Rod and bait, aim at a suitable spot, and left-click to cast.
  • Hooking a Fish: Wait for a fish to bite; an indicator will appear. You have five seconds to start reeling in before the fish escapes.
  • Reeling In: Hold left-click to reel in the fish. Maintain the reeling circle about half-filled to avoid snapping the line.
  • Quick-Time Events: Occasionally, prompts will appear to press ‘A’ or ‘D’ to pull left or right, helping to deplete the fish’s stamina.
  • Managing Stamina: Monitor both your stamina and the fish’s. If your stamina depletes, the fish will escape.

Your end goal is to catch the fish. The fish will be caught once it loses its entire stamina. You can then decide whether to catch it or release it back in the water. Press F to keep the fish, or press G to release the fish.

Optimal Fishing Locations in Once Human

Certain locations in Once Human are known for better fishing yields:

  • Wild Dog Isle: Known for a variety of fish species.
  • Brookham Dock: Popular among players for consistent catches.
  • Harborside Bridge: Offers access to both freshwater and saltwater fish.
  • Greywater Camp: A secluded spot with diverse fish types.
  • Holt Town Decking: Ideal for catching rare fish.
  • Chalk Peak: High-altitude fishing with unique species.

How to Store your Caught Fishes

Much like any perishable item in the game, Fishes also have an expiry date. Luckily, you can store the fish to elongate its lifespan and keep it fresh for a few extra days. You can do so either by keeping the fish in the refrigerator, or by using a Meat Drier to keep the fish dry and essentially keep it fresh forever.

Another neat hack is to simply mount the fish using a Specimen Rack. This will keep the fish fresh and edible for as long as you keep it hung. Keep in mind, you can only put one creature at display at a time. You can also use a Fish tank to keep your fish. The tank has limited room and can accommodate a variety of fish based on their size. A fish tank has a total capacity of four.
